AUBURNDALE — A pair of Auburndale win streaks came to an end Friday as Marathon rolled into town to beat the Apaches in Marawood Conference South Division baseball and softball games at Auburndale High School.

Marathon won both games by 7-1 scores to stay in contention for the conference titles in each sport.

In the baseball matchup, Auburndale stuck out 11 times and was limited to one run, that coming in the first inning.

Cason Schmutzer had two of the Apaches’ six hits as Auburndale (4-6, 4-5 Marawood South) had its three-game winning streak stopped.

Marathon is now 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the Marawood South, needing just one win in its final four games to clinch at least a share of the conference title.

In the Auburndale softball team’s loss, the Apaches were limited to just three hits, all from Robyn Brokish.

Marathon scored three times in the first and third innings against Auburndale pitcher Alexis Soppe to pull way and improve to 12-3 overall and 8-1 in the Marawood South. Marathon is one-half game behind Stratford in the conference standings, and the two teams match up at Marathon on Monday.

Auburndale had its four-game win streak snapped and falls to 6-8-1 overall and 3-6 in the Marawood South.

The Auburndale baseball team plays a nonconference doubleheader at Spencer on Saturday, and both the baseball and softball teams will travel to Northland Lutheran for conference games on Monday. The softball matchup is a doubleheader.
