Tigers drop to 1-2 in WVC

By Paul Lecker

MERRILL — Merrill scored six runs during the first three innings, and Marshfield could not recover as the Bluejays went on to a 9-3 win in a Wisconsin Valley Conference softball game Tuesday.

Merrill greeted Marshfield pitcher Megan Donahue with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and led 6-0 before the Tigers got on the scoreboard with a run in the fourth.

Marshfield closed to within a 7-3 score with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but Merrill answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning and held on for the win.

Taylor Krueger scattered seven hits to earn the win for Merrill.

Jenna Jakobi continued her hot hitting for the Tigers, going 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs. Emily Draeger and Donahue had RBIs for Marshfield (5-4, 1-2 Wisconsin Valley Conference). Jakobi is a perfect 10-for-10 at the plate in Marshfield’s last three games.

Kelsie Belfiori had three hits and four RBIs, and Chelsey LaMonica hit a home run and scored three times for the Bluejays (4-4, 4-0 WVC).

Marshfield returns to action Thursday with a home game against D.C. Everest. The game will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Marshfield Fairgrounds.
