2016 WIAA boys basketball playoffs, regional schedule

Regionals start March 1

MARSHFIELD — The brackets for the upcoming 2016 WIAA boys basketball playoffs were released on Sunday.

The tournament begins with regional quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 1. Regionals continue with semifinals on March 4 and finals on March 5. Sectionals are set for March 10 and March 12, and survivors move on to the 2016 WIAA State Boys Basketball Tournament on March 17-19 at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Locally, Marshfield is the No. 6 seed in Division 1 Sectional 1. The Tigers (14-7) will host No. 11 Oshkosh West (8-12) in a regional semifinal on Friday, March 4.

Auburndale, Spencer, and Stratford are in the same bracket in Division 4 Sectional 2.

Auburndale (7-12) is the No. 8 seed and will host No. 9 Neillsville (10-9) in a regional quarterfinal Tuesday, March 1. The winner moves on to play No. 1 seed Edgar (18-2) in a regional semifinal. Auburndale defeated Neillsville on Feb. 20 in a nonconference game 59-48.

Spencer (14-6) is the No. 5 seed and will play at home against No. 12 Crandon (8-13) in a regional quarterfinal March 1. The winner plays at No. 4 Crivitz (17-3) in a regional semifinal.

Stratford (11-9) is the No. 7 seed and will also host a regional quarterfinal against No. 10 Coleman (8-12). The winner will take on Marawood Conference South champ Marathon (17-3) in a regional semifinal.

In Division 5 Cloverbelt Conference East champion Marshfield Columbus Catholic (18-2) is the No. 2 seed in Sectional 2 and will play at home against No. 15 Athens (1-15) in a regional quarterfinal. Port Edwards (20-1) is the No. 1 seed, and Almond-Bancroft (16-2) is No. 3 in the same bracket. Port Edwards (third), Almond-Bancroft (fourth), and Columbus Catholic (eighth) are all ranked in the top 10 in the Wissports.net Division 5 state coaches poll.
