MAYVILLE — Clark County’s first traffic fatality of 2016 occurred on Thursday when a logging truck collided with a horse-drawn buggy on County Highway A in the town of Mayville, according to a release from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 1:36 p.m. on Thursday reporting the crash.
Aaron N. Newswanger, 50, was driving a buggy east on County Highway A, and Jacob Stai, 36, was operating a logging truck headed west, according to initial investigation.
“As they met about 30 yards away from each other, the horse became spooked and turned abruptly in front of the truck into the lane of traffic,” the release said. Stai “tried to avoid the buggy and swerved but struck the buggy before entering the north ditch,” the release said.
Aaron Newswanger and his passenger Esther Newswanger, 49, were ejected from the buggy. Aaron was pronounced dead at the scene while Esther was transported via helicopter to Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital “for incapacitating injuries.”
Stai and his passenger Devon Coon, 19, were not injured, and both were wearing seatbelts. Neither occupant of the buggy were using “any type of restraints” the release said. The release said alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash.
