MARSHFIELD — Super Bowl champion, Rozellville native, and Columbus Catholic graduate Rich Seubert was back in Marshfield Monday night at his old stomping grounds.
To celebrate of the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl, the NFL is presenting high schools that have an alumnus that has won a Super Bowl with a golden football inscribed with the player’s name and the Super Bowl in which he played. The program is part of the NFL Super Bowl High School Honor Roll initiative.
Per NFL.com, “The NFL Foundation will provide the schools with a new character education curriculum and the opportunity to apply for grants of up to $5,000 to help support and grow their football programs. The NFL Foundation has invested $1 million towards the campaign.”
Seubert, a starting offensive lineman on the 2007-2008 New York Giants team that defeated the — to that point unbeaten — New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, not only presented the golden ball Monday night but also took part in a basketball scrimmage in which several Columbus athletic legends of years past took on the current Columbus varsity basketball team.
Seubert was a member of the football, basketball, and baseball varsity teams at Columbus, graduating in 1997. His memories of winning the Super Bowl, Seubert said, were mostly tied to the celebration with family and friends after the game. He was back among family and friends on Monday night.
“Every time I come home I always make a point to come in here (to Columbus High School),” Seubert said. “I enjoyed my time here. I’m glad I went to school here. This school is what made me the way I am now.”
Score was not kept during the game, but the competitive juices were clearly evident as the current varsity clashed with legends of Columbus lore. Hundreds packed the gym to watch the game. Seubert joked that his size determined the style of play he showcased on the court.
“I’m a post guy. Look at me,” Seubert quipped.
The other legends playing in the game were:
—Mark Mineau (1996 Columbus graduate).
—Jason Linzmeier (1997).
—Mike Weister (1997).
—James Banks (1997).
—Jake Konieczny (1999).
—Shawn Lee (2003).
—Neal Zygarlicke (2007).
—Trevor Gorman (2008).
—Jared Boyle (2011).
