MARSHFIELD — Marshfield Clinic is hosting celebrity TV chef Tiffany Derry Saturday, Nov. 7, during the fall diabetes education conference.
The conference, “Gambling with Diabetes, Playing to Win,” will be 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Hotel Marshfield, 2700 S. Central Ave. in Marshfield.
Participants at this free educational event will learn about resources available to help manage and prevent diabetes. In 2012, 29.1 million Americans, or 9.3 percent of the population, had diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association.
Marilyn Hodgson, Marshfield Clinic’s program coordinator for Nutrition and Diabetes Services, said some diabetic patients do not take their diabetes seriously, particularly if they do not have symptoms.
“You must learn to manage diabetes to help avoid complications, such as increased risk of heart attack and stroke,” Hodgson said. “You must take medication, eat healthy, and exercise regularly to have a much healthier and happier life.”
Derry, a fan favorite on Bravo’s “Top Chef” Season 7 and “Top Chef All-Stars,” has also appeared on Spike TV’s “Hungry Investors” and “Bar Rescue.” Derry is touring the country with Novo Nordisk to educate people about healthy lifestyles and portion control. She will prepare a meal for event participants.
“With her family’s experience with diabetes, Derry always wants to teach people how to improve their cooking and food prep to make it healthier,” Hodgson said. “Participants in the events in past years said they appreciated having a professional chef show them how to make foods they like healthier.”
