WISCONSIN RAPIDS — Luke McCann netted a hat trick to lift the Marshfield boys soccer team to a 5-2 win over Wisconsin Rapids in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game Tuesday night at Washington Elementary School in Wisconsin Rapids.
The win moves the Tigers to 7-6-2 overall and into a second-place tie with Stevens Point at 6-3 in the WVC. Rapids drops to 9-7-1 overall and 5-5 in the conference.
After Rapids took a 1-0 lead, McCann scored to tie the game at 1-1. He put the Tigers ahead with a penalty kick 49 seconds into the second half and added another off an assist by Collin Nikolai at the 63:03 mark.
Jared Jurgenson and Alec Hinson added goals, both off assists from Leo Steiner, to put the game out of reach for Marshfield.
Mathias Holm had 10 saves in goal for the Tigers.
“We had strong goalkeeping by Mathias Holm, and strong defense with good finishing all led to a solid win,” Marshfield coach Steve McCann said. “Rapids plays with high intensity, and we were able to match them tonight. I’m proud of the boys tonight for their effort and focus.”
Marshfield hosts Merrill at 4 p.m. Thursday at Griese Park.
