SARATOGA — Seventeen-year-old Miguel Oertel shot and killed 47-year-old Theresa Coates in the town of Saratoga on Monday night and then turned the gun on himself, according to a release from the Wood County Sheriff’s Department. Oertel arrived at 6010 Church Avenue with a shotgun where he shot Coates.

Coates was pronounced dead at the hospital. Oertel is under guard by the Wood County Sheriff’s Department at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield. He is in critical but stable condition with nonlife-threatening injuries, according to the release.

The Wood County Sheriff’s Department said that Coates and Oertel did know each other and that there is no continued threat to the community. The release stated that the department responded to a report from a 17-year-old female that two people had been shot at the Church Avenue residence.
