Galway’s We Banjo 3 back to Marshfield by popular demand
For Hub City Times
MARSHFIELD — This August, for the third year in a row, award-winning Galway band We Banjo 3 brings its rich, extraordinary “Irish and Americana Music and Song” to Chestnut Center for the Arts. The quartet takes center stage in the historic Performance Hall on Sunday, Aug. 9, at 7:30 p.m.
Enda and Fergal Scahill along with David and Martin Howley are among the most celebrated and distinguished young musicians in Ireland today. Featuring banjos plus fiddle, mandolin, guitar, vocals, and percussion, We Banjo 3 makes a bold musical statement. Creativity, sensitivity, and passion are present in full measure, and Irish music is at the heart of what they play.
Earle Hitchner, music writer for the Wall Street Journal, said that We Banjo 3 has a “freshness and finesse bordering on the magical.”
Collectively, the members of We Banjo 3 have been at the forefront of Irish banjo and fiddle music for two decades. Their competitive success is impressive, with Martin holding seven All-Ireland Banjo Champion titles and Enda four. Multi-instrumentalists Fergal and David hold All-Ireland titles on fiddle, bodhran, guitar, and banjo.
Enda has recorded and performed with The Chieftains, Frankie Gavin, Stockton’s Wing, Grammy-winner Ricky Skaggs, and “Instrumental Band of the Decade” The Brock McGuire Band. Fergal has performed with David Munnelly, Martin O’Connor, and Kevin Crawford and has also toured the world with Ragus and Celtic Legends. Martin was the first Irish banjo player to perform at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. David is quickly building a reputation for his deep, muscular singing.
We Banjo 3 plays with swing and soul, effortlessly combining the best of Irish and bluegrass banjo music and song, mining the rich vein of the American old-time tradition and thoroughly reinventing the banjo band sound. Modern rhythms, traditional melodies, virtuosic technique, and innovative arrangements of music and song add up to an incredible musical feast.
