Columbus Catholic/Spencer’s Ben Alt takes third at WIAA Division 2 boys golf regional to qualify for sectional

Alt shoots 77 to earn spot in sectional at Ashland on June 2

TREMPEALEAU — Junior Ben Alt shot a 79 to finish third for the Columbus Catholic/Spencer boys golf team at the WIAA Division 2 regional on Wednesday and earned a spot in next week’s sectional.

Nick Anderson of Gale-Ettrick-Trepealeau shot a 74 to win the regional title at Trempeleau Mountain Golf Club. The meet was hosted by Arcadia.

Matt LaFaunge of Black River Falls finished second with a 77, and Alt was next with a 79 and earned one of the four individual spots on the D-2 sectional on June 2 at Chequamegon Bay Golf Club in Ashland.

Columbus Catholic/Spencer finished eighth out of 10 teams in the standings with a score of 396. Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau had a 330 to edge Aracadia by two for the regional team title.

Rounding out the scoring for the Dons were Derrick Porter with a 96, Donavan Fox with a 109, James Hinrichsen with a 112, and Matt Olson with a 121.

The top two teams and top three individuals not on those qualifying teams will advance to the 2015 WIAA State Boys Golf Championshps at University Ridge Golf Club in Verona on June 8-9.
