Tigers end Valley season with 3-9 record

WAUSAU — Wausau East scored runs in the final three innings to pull past Marshfield 3-2 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference softball game Thursday at East High School.

Marshfield led 2-0 after a two-run second inning. Mary Kloos walked and came around to score on an error, and Emily Draeger had an RBI double to put the Tigers on top.

The lead held for three innings until East broke through with single runs in the fifth and sixth.

Olivia Zipperer had a two-out RBI single in the fifth, and Callie Heinrich drove in a run in the sixth to tie the game 2-2.

Zipperer walked with one out in the seventh, went to second on a groundout, and scored on a single by Angela Flashinski to win it for the Lumberjacks (8-14, 3-9 Wisconsin Valley Conference).

Marshfield left 11 runners on base in the loss.

The Tigers finish the Wisconsin Valley Conference slate with a 3-9 record and in a tie for fifth place with East. Marshfield will wrap up its regular-season schedule with a nonconference game at home against Mosinee on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the Marshfield Fairgrounds.

The Tigers (9-13 overall) will then turn to the postseason. Marshfield is the No. 10 seed in its Division 1 sectional and will play at No. 7 Eau Claire North at 5 p.m. next Wednesday.

“Struggled to get runners in once we would get them on base,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “We had plenty of opportunities tonight. Megan pitched a good game for us. We just needed to get some offense going behind her.”
