Tigers score 23 runs in doubleheader

By Paul Lecker

Sports Reporter

MARSHFIELD — The Marshfield softball team split a nonconference doubleheader against Antigo on Saturday, winning 14-4 in five innings and losing 19-9 in six innings, at the Marshfield Fairgrounds.

Megan Donahue and Kayla Kluge each had two hits and three RBIs each in the Game 1 win for the Tigers (8-7).

Kluge earned the win, scattering five walks and nine hits but allowing just four runs.

Emily Draeger added a triple and three RBIs, and Megan Nordbeck and Alyssa Wilhelm each had two hits for Marshfield.

In Game 2 Marshfield scored five times in the top of the second but could not hold on as Antigo used an eight-run fourth to pull ahead for good.

Alyssa Ede had a single and a double and scored three times for the Tigers.

“We played a really good game in Game 1,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “Kayla Kluge did a great job pitching, keeping them off balance, and then our defense played well behind her. Offensively, we came up with some big hits with runners in scoring position, which is something we have been missing at times this year.

“In Game 2 we continued to hit well early in the game, but we struggled a little defensively, and that did not help when we needed it.”

Marshfield hosts Wisconsin Rapids at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Marshfield Fairgrounds.
