MARSHFIELD — The Marshfield Professional Police Association (MPPA) will honor Peace Officer Memorial Day with a ceremony at Beell Stadium on Monday, May 11, at 6:30 p.m.

The ceremony is the MPPA’s annual honoring of Fred A. Beell. Beell was a Marshfield police officer who was killed in the line of duty while responding to a burglary at the Marshfield Brewery on August 5, 1933. Beell was a professional wrestler and local here long before he gave his life in protection of the Marshfield community.

This year’s service will also include a reflection from Bailey Keffer, son of a Marshfield police sergeant, and the presentation of the department’s Employee of the Year Award to retired Lt. and current school crossing guard John Scheuer. Scheuer’s recognition is based upon his over 47 years of service to his community in these two roles. He is a meticulous leader and has also been a steadfast advocate for area youth sports.

Retired lead officer Steve Leu and retired Chief Gary Jepsen will be presented with the department’s Service Award for their long and distinguished careers with the Marshfield Police Department.

Members of the community are invited to come and share with the MPPA in honoring Beell. Everyone is invited to a reception immediately following the ceremony.

The ceremony will be held on the north end of Beell Stadium on the Marshfield Middle School campus. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Marshfield Middle School cafeteria.

The Marshfield Professional Police Association is a benevolent fraternal organization made up of members of the city of Marshfield Police Department.
