RIVER FALLS — The Marshfield girls soccer team kicked off its 2015 campaign with a split of two games at the River Falls Invitational on Saturday.

Marshfield shut out Menomonie 2-0 in the opener before losing 5-0 to River Falls.

Maddie Haessly scored 8:09 into the second half, and Julia Urban added a goal with just under nine minutes remaining in the game to lift the Tigers to the win over Menomonie.

Marshfield held the Mustangs without a shot on goal in the victory.

River Falls scored three goals in a 20-minute stretch of the first half to pull out to a 3-0 halftime lead and held the Tigers scoreless and to just two shots on goal.

Andrea Carolfi had four saves in the loss for Marshfield.

“We played well overall on the day, and we tried different things to prepare for the season,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “I like what I saw as some of the freshmen, and new players played well but saw that varsity is a huge jump from junior high.”

Marshfield opens its home and Wisconsin Valley Conference schedule Tuesday, hosting Wausau West at 5 p.m. at Griese Park.
