Matt Nikolay scores 25 points to lead Auburndale boys basketball past Chequamegon

AUBURNDALE — Matt Nikolay poured in 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Auburndale boys basketball team to a 60-36 victory over Chequamegon in the third-place game of the Marawood Conference crossovers Thursday night at Auburndale High School.
Auburndale shot 55 percent (21 of 38) from the field and made 12 of 16 free throws to cruise to the victory.
The Apaches (15-7) led 18-9 after one quarter and 38-16 by halftime as they dominated from the start.
Nikolay made 5 of 6 shots from 3-point range and 6 of 8 free throws, and Alex Marth added 14 points, making 7 of 9 shots, for Auburndale.
Justin Herbst topped Chequamegon (10-12) with 13 points.
Auburndale is off until next Friday, March 6, when it will host the winner of Tuesday’s Spencer-Stevens Point Pacelli game in a WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal.
