Stratford moves eight on to state tournament at WIAA Division 3 individual wrestling sectional

SHAWANO – Stratford had eight of its nine sectional qualifiers place in the top three Saturday at the WIAA Division 3 individual wrestling sectional, and the group advances to next week’s state tournament in Madison.
A.J. Schoenfuss (106 pounds), Jeremy Schoenherr (113), Mason Kauffman (126), Kamren Bornbach (182) and Hunter Kauffman (220) won sectional titles for the Tigers, while Sam Wenzel ended up second at 132, and Tyson Kauffman (285) and Anthony Gliniecki (120) were third.
The top three finishers in each weight class at the sectional qualify for the 2015 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison on Feb. 26-28.
Spencer had three state qualifiers and Auburndale added two second-place finishers.
Bryce Shaw (26-18) of Spencer was pinned in the 113-pound championship match to Schoenherr (39-2) in 1:04, then came back to win a second-place wrestleback over Sawyer Theobald of Shiocton 8-2.
Tim Bauer (29-15) ended up third at 132 for the Rockets. Bauer lost the championship match to Jensyn Schaal of Coleman 15-2 and a second-place wrestleback to Wenzel (30-11) of Stratford 4-1.
Freshman Hunter Luepke (41-5) grabbed the third spot at state for Spencer after taking third at 195 pounds. He defeated Max Villnow of Amherst 10-4 to win the third-place match.
Auburndale’s Paul Willfahrt and Wyatt Weiler each finished second to move on to Madison.
Willfahrt (41-5) dropped the 145-pound championship match to Austin Riehl of Shiocton 3-1, while Weiler (41-7) won a third-place match at 160 pounds over Garrett Gunderson of Shiocton 16-8, then defeated Tony Kontney of Rosholt 9-7 in a second-place wrestleback.
Stratford dominated the championship round with five of the 14 individual titles. Schoenfuss (43-2) pinned Jordan Boldt of Bonduel in 2:34 at 106 pounds; sophomore Mason Kauffman improved to 46-0 this season by defeating Elton Kelsey of Oconto 5-0 at 126 pounds; Bornbach edged Henry Fielding of Shiocton 5-2 to improve to 38-3; Hunter Kauffman (39-1) knocked off Wesley Dittman of Edgar 3-2 at 220 pounds; and Schoenherr beat Shaw of Spencer at 113.
