Cold-shooting Columbus Catholic girls basketball loses Cloverbelt crossover to Thorp

MARSHFIELD — The Marshfield Columbus Catholic girls basketball team was held to seven made field goals and just five first-half points in a 37-16 loss to Thorp in the fifth-place game of the Cloverbelt Conference crossovers on Thursday night at Columbus Catholic High School.

Thorp (12-9) pulled ahead 17-5 at halftime after outscoring the Dons 13-2 in the second quarter.

Columbus (11-11) made just one basket in each of the first two quarters. Abby Baierl scored all nine of the Dons’ points in the third quarter, but they could only muster one basket again in the fourth quarter in the loss.

Columbus Catholic’s top scorer, Jess Trad, was held scoreless in the game on 0-for-6 shooting. Baierl finished with a team-high 10. Overall, the Dons were 8 of 34 from the field.

Columbus Catholic will host Greenwood in a WIAA Division 5 regional quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The game will be broadcast on WDLB-AM 1450 and wdlbwosq.com.
