Stratford boys basketball knocks off Athens

STRATFORD — Dawson Gebelein scored 14 points, and Michael Bargender added 12 points and six rebounds to lead the Stratford boys basketball team to a 60-45 nonconference win over Athens on Friday night at Stratford High School.

Stratford shot 46 percent from the field (26-for-56) and had 10 steals in the victory.

Jake Reif added 10 points and five assists, and Derek Schmidt had nine points and six rebounds for Stratford (11-6) in a balanced scoring attack.

Stratford led 30-23 at halftime before putting the game away with a 16-6 run in the third quarter.

Lane Tessmer led Athens (3-13) with 13 points.

Stratford plays at Pittsville on Tuesday.
