MARSHFIELD — The Heart O’ Wisconsin Sweet Adeline Chorus will present its barbershop-style music on Saturday Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 1413 S. Felker Ave. in Marshfield. The Sweet Adelines perform a capella.
The event will also feature the barbershop quartet After Dark that hails from the Eau Claire area. Children from Columbus Catholic Elementary Schools will sing in the concert as well, and refreshments will be provided at the event.
The holiday concert is open to the community with a special emphasis on providing entertainment for the elderly and those that have disabilities. A member of the Sweet Adelines and a co-chair of the holiday concert, Ann Walgenbach, said they will arrange transportation for people that may not be able to get to the concert independently.
Admission for the concert is $7 for adults, $3 for children, and $2 for the elderly or those with disabilities. St. Alban’s church is completely handicap accessible.
The Sweet Adelines are a group of 27 women from all around the Marshfield and surrounding area with a passion for music. The group was founded in Marshfield in May of 1976.
Mary Castner, a co-director of the Sweet Adelines, said she enjoys both the social and musical elements of performing with the group.
“It’s the people. It’s the music. … I’ve learned so much through this organization,” she said. “Our chorus is a very friendly chorus, and it always has been.”
Walgenbach added that the holiday concert is something they do to serve the community.
“We don’t do it to make money. We’re doing it for the community,” she said.
The group sings at various events throughout the year including Christmas parties, weddings, anniversaries, church services, and more. They are available by request.
The Sweet Adelines practice every Monday evening at 7 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church in Marshfield, and they invite those interested in becoming members to stop by a practice. For questions about the holiday concert, to ask about transportation to the event, or if you are interested in joining Sweet Adelines, contact Ann Walgenbach at 715-207-6664.
